Boat-Building Near Flatford Mill is an 1815 landscape painting by the English artist John Constable. It depicts the building of a boat at a dry dock along the River Stour that was owned by Constable’s father in East Bergholt, England.

The painting portrays all the activities that you expect to see at a boat shop. These include preparing wood for building a new boat; testing a boat by the river; and lastly a man working on the boat by docks. Also, the workshop is equipped with tools used in boat building.

Constable’s compositions were clearly dictated by what he saw in front of him, the nature of the English landscape, of rural pastures he had grown up with, using symmetrical compositions and scenes that focused on manmade buildings such as a mill, a church, a cottage, or as we see here, a barge.
