【原文】

云安井,自大江溯别派,凡三十里。近井十五里,澄清如镜,舟楫无虞2。近江十五里,皆滩石险恶,难于沿溯。

天师翟乾祐,念商旅之劳,于汉城山上结坛考召,追命群龙。凡一十四处,皆化为老人应召而止。乾祐谕以滩波之险,害物劳人,使皆平之3。一夕之间,风雷震击,一十四里尽为平潭矣。惟一滩仍旧,龙亦不至。

乾祐复严敕神吏追之4。又三日,有一女子至焉。因责其不伏应召之意,女子曰:“某所以不来者5,欲助天师广济物之功耳。且富商大贾,力皆有余,而佣力负运者,力皆不足。云安之贫民,自江口负财货至近井潭,以给衣食者众矣。今若轻舟利涉,平江无虞,即邑之贫民无佣负之所,绝衣食之路,所困者多矣。余宁险滩波以赡佣负,不可利舟楫以安富商。所以不至者,理在此也。”

乾祐善其言6,因使诸龙皆复其故,风雷顷刻,而长滩如旧。

天宝中,诏赴上京,恩遇隆厚7。岁余,还故山,寻得道而去8。

【今译】

云安井这个地方,有一条长江的支流,长三十里。靠近云安井的这十五里,水清澄如镜,船只来往没有风险;靠近长江的那十五里,都是乱石险滩,难以行船。

云安井有位翟乾祐天师,念及往来商旅的艰辛,便在汉城山上筑坛作法,召集群龙。结果十四处险滩的神龙,都化成老人前来听命。翟天师告诉他们:“险滩江波凶险,危害财物和人员。请各龙神平整自己所辖的险滩。”一夜之间,风雷大作,十四里河滩都化为平潭;唯独一处险滩依旧,那处的龙神也没有应召前来。

翟天师严令神吏追召那龙神。过了三日,龙神才化作一位女子前来。翟天师责备她不服应召,女子说:“我之所以不来,是想帮助天师广济天下众生。你想,富商大贾,财力有余;而那些靠出卖体力搬运货物的人,财力匮乏。云安的穷人,许多是靠从江口挑运货物到井潭养家糊口的。现在如果江流顺畅,行船无虞,直达井潭,那么,当地的穷人就失去了受雇搬运的机会,断了生计,困难只会更多。我宁愿让险滩存在,给人们带来搬运挣钱的机会,也不愿让舟船便利,以利富商。我不来应召,道理就在这里。”

翟天师觉得她的话有理,于是召令诸龙神将河滩恢复原状。顷刻之间又是风雷大作,河床恢复了旧貌。

天宝年间,翟天师应诏赴京,受到皇帝的宠誉。一年后,他回到故山,得道升天了。                                                                                                            □

【英译】

A tributary of the Yangtzi River flowed thirty miles from Yun’anjing to the main stream. For the first fifteen miles downstream from Yun’anjing, sailing was smooth on clear waters, but the remaining stretch was riddled with dangerous rocky shoals.

In Yun’anjing lived a powerful Taoist master named Zhai Qianyou. Seeing the hardships faced by travelling merchants navigating the rapids, he ascended Mount Hancheng, seated himself on a makeshift altar, and used Taoist magic to summon the dragons in charge of the shoals. One by one, the dragons of the fourteen dangerous shoals appeared, taking the form of old men. The Taoist told them: “The shoals in your charge have taken a heavy toll on lives and property. I ask you to use your divine power to clear the sand bars and dredge the riverbed.”

That night, as wind howled and thunder rumbled, the shoals were transformed into a fourteen-mile stretch of smooth water. Only one shoal remained unchanged―its dragon had ignored the summons.

So Zhai performed a second ritual, commanding heavenly generals to find the dragon and bring it before him. Yet the dragon appeared only three days later, in the form of a young woman: she was a goddess. Chastised for her delay, she responded thoughtfully: “I’ve been considering how to benefit people of all walks equally. Rich merchants have more than enough to spend, but poor porters struggle just to get by. Many of Yun’anjing’s poor earn their living carrying goods from the river mouth to the edge of the town. If the river became the unobstructed waterway you desire, they would lose their only way to survive. I would rather leave the shoal as it is―for the poor’s sake―than remove it to speed navigation for the rich. This is why I ignored your first summons.”

Moved by her wisdom and compassion, Zhai ordered the dragons to restore the riverbed to its original state. At once, as gales howled and thunderbolts struck, the shoals reappeared exactly as they had been.

Later, the emperor summoned Zhai Qianyou to the imperial court and bestowed high honors on him. The next year, the Taoist master returned to his mountain, where he passed away; it was said his spirit ascended to Heaven, a reward for his extraordinary deeds and kindness.
